Mindset Shift: When Progress Looks Like Chaos

The Quote That Called Me Out

“If everything seems under control, you’re just not going fast enough.” — Mario Andretti.

I read that and felt personally attacked. Not because I’m a racecar driver. Because I’m someone who has spent an embarrassing amount of energy trying to build the Perfect System — the right app, the ideal routine, the clean calendar — and then wondering why nothing actually gets done.

Inbox zero. Color-coded days. A Notion setup that could qualify as architecture. Peace, surely, any moment now.

The Part Where I Admit the Problem

Here’s what I keep running into: control feels safe, but safe is slow.

If your systems are perfectly polished, you’re probably not building anything that stretches you. You’re curating. Optimizing the container instead of putting anything in it.

I know this because I’ve done it. Repeatedly. With enthusiasm.

Why It’s Supposed to Be Uncomfortable

Muscles tear before they strengthen. Neural networks rewire through challenge, not comfort. This isn’t a metaphor I’m reaching for — it’s just how biology works.

Growth is messy by design. If it were tidy, it wouldn’t be growth. It’d be maintenance.

The Shift I’m Practicing

Messy is not broken. That’s the whole thing.

I’m trying to stop measuring success by how “in control” I feel and start measuring it by whether anything actually moved — even if it’s bumpy, half-finished, or held together with duct tape and good intentions.

I still need systems. I still need tools that help me capture ideas and finish what matters. But I’m done waiting for calm before I move forward.

Control is a comfort blanket. Progress is the thing under it, kicking.
